Microsoft Lumia Denim update starts to roll out
Microsoft today announced that it has started to push out an update to its Windows-based Lumia smartphones called the Lumia Denim Update. This is an important update and the first major system revision under Microsoft’s sole stewardship. Any Windows Lumia smartphone running Windows Phone 8.1 will be able to apply the update.
Cortana, Microsoft’s voice interactive personal assistant is a major part of the update. She escapes her US-only status to arrive in the UK and China in beta form and in Australia, Canada, India, France, Italy, Germany and Spain as an alpha test. So non-US residents looking forward to hands-free smartphone interaction via Cortana can now experience a lot of what the US users have been raving about!
Newer Lumias with SensorCore tech such as the Lumia 930, Lumia Icon and Lumia 1520 will now be able to activate Cortana from an idle state with the ‘Hey Cortana’ key-phrase. That’s a handy hands-free feature which debuted on the Moto X.
Live folders start screen personalisation
Now Lumia users will be able to be more organised and more tidy on their Start Screens. Live folders are part of the Denim update to create order from chaos on your smartphone. Or you could possibly use them to make things even more chaotic – that’s down to you!
Lumia camera, faster more intuitive, better quality
Many Lumia owners bought the devices due to their high quality built-in cameras. Owners of the recent Lumia Icon, Lumia 1520, Lumia 930 and Lumia 830 will all get a new Lumia Camera app to make the cameras even more potent. In addition to the above Microsoft has brought several other improvements and tweaks to the Lumia range. These include; an updated glance screen on compatible handsets, and improved IE browser and a consumer VPN network feature.
I recently updated my smartphone and left the Windows platform for Android – just for a change. However I’m still waiting for any update to arrive to patch bugs and bring modern features (where is Lollipop?) while my old Lumia would have got this update by now and be looking forward to Windows 10…
