Sony celebrates PlayStation 20th anniversary with retro limited edition PS4
To commemorate and celebrate PlayStation’s 20th anniversary, Sony has unveiled a special edition retro-themed PlayStation 4 that hardcore fans will certainly be fighting over. The premium collector devices were announced exactly 20 years after the PS1 hit markets on 3 December 1994, reports GSM Arena.
The Tokyo technology giant will be releasing a limited set of 12,300 units of unique PlayStation 4s, matching the launch date of the PS1, designed and manufactured to resemble the legendary first generation PlayStation as closely as possible. “Influenced by the iconic design of the original,” the PS4 20th Anniversary Edition will bear astonishing details from the shade of grey used for the case, controller, and even down to the old-school power cables and the original PS logo on the box for the full 1994 retro effect.
The new PS4 will functionally be the same, but that ironically means that it will not have the ability to load up games from the original PlayStation either. There’s never short of retro titles available as digital downloads now days anyway, so we doubt that it would be a deal breaker. Each of the limited edition console will come with a numbered badge, showing which of the 12,300 units it is, but if you already own a PS4, Sony’s has also released a PS1-themed redesign for the homepage of its current console.
