LINE launches Toss for quick and easy photo and video gallery sharing

The creators of the popular instant messaging (IM) app called LINE have launched a new app called toss. The app is meant to enable users to share collections of their favourite pictures and videos with great ease and speed. We are told that the app is “a must-have if you’ve ever found yourself searching through pictures and movie files on your smartphone to view them or share them with friends”. Users take pictures/videos, pick through them and easily ‘toss’ them to friends.

The mobile app is currently available on Android and is coming soon to iOS devices. No mention is made about availability or scheduling for other platforms such as Windows Phone. The key features of the new app can be broken down as follows:

  • Sorting of your photos/videos by time or by the location where they were taken
  • Easy group multiple media selection and then sharing via the LINE app
  • Unlimited sharing and individual files (up to 20 at a time) can be up to 500MB in size
  • Share history shows you what you have previously shared with any of your friends
  • Previous shared batches can be re-shared with others.

When your media gallery is sorted by time and date a vertical feed facilitates fast scrolling through your thumbnail view history. If you begin to scroll faster the scrolling steps up into a speed reading mode (see the middle slide below). Alternatively you can sort your media files by location with files grouped by where they were taken. You can browse what looks like a Google Map featuring image locations and there’s also a slider to drill down to media according to the distance from your current location.

If there’s anything you see that you want to share you tap the share button and tap through your media making selections before confirming with the share button again. Now you select who to share with from your LINE contact list. If any of your LINE contacts don’t have the Toss app then they will still be able to view inside LINE, so users don’t have to feel constricted or forced into using the new app. Overall it looks like a good app for those happy with the LINE instant messenger and with most of their friends on this platform.
