LG teases circular smartwatch G Watch R, to be revealed at IFA next week

LG has released a new teaser video showing its upcoming smartwatch, which is set to be revealed at IFA next week, sporting a traditional circular watch face design.

With Motorola’s Moto 360 smartwatch appearing to be the most favoured out of the three watches shown at Google’s I/O in June alongside the Android Wear OS, the classic circular watchface seems to be more crowd pleasing than rival square designs. Catching up with the trend, LG will be launching a round-faced sequel to its LG G Watch, which has only been out for two months, at the tradeshow in Berlin in just over a week, not long after Moto 360’s official launch event in Chicago on 4th September.

The South Korean electronics giant has given the refreshed smartwatch the name LG G Watch R, with the R suffix assumedly appended meaning round. The new video does not give many details away but images of a circular watch design with a side-mounted button and indications that it will be ‘coming soon’. A few new watch faces are also revealed in the video, and a few glimpses of a digital step counter, distance meter and compass.

Besides rivalling the similar form factor Moto 360, the LG G Watch R will also be launched against ASUS’ new smartwatch, also set to be revealed at IFA, as well as with Apple’s rumoured iWatch which is supposedly being unveiled in September too.

Some of those looking deeply into the brief video LG presented above have pointed out that the company seems to be taking a dig at Moto 360’s irregularly rounded design. “LG’s “fill the gap” while pushing down on the bottom of the circle is likely a dig at the black bar at the bottom of the Moto 360 display,” wrote Engadget.

However, it is unclear where the watch will be positioned in terms of pricing compared to the original G Watch, whether it will take over as the premium version and position the original as a budget version or not. It is not long now until all is revealed, and we will certainly keep you updated with any new information.
